The First Step

07-12-2010

The theme in my practice was for our practice members to develop the mindset that their patients would have to be crazy to ever go anywhere else for their care.  So, we developed systems to deliver on this premise.  We also created communications strategies to foster the idea that care was a “family affair” in our office. We instituted “Ritz Carlton” staff meetings so that we could, as the Ritz Carlton does, meet and exceed the stated and unstated expectations of our practice members.

Chiropractic Software is the Key to a Successful Paperless Practice

The paperless office has many benefits, but for many this goal has been elusive. Instead, the computer age has often generated more paper than ever before. But with the right approach, it is possible to build a successful paperless chiropractic office. Why switch to a paperless office? Here are a few of the benefits reaped from eliminating paper and switching to an entirely digital electronic office:

Marketing for a Digital Age

06-16-2010

marteting190

Chiropractors today face some serious and significant challenges that professionals in the past never had to deal with. In addition to updating their databases with new chiropractic software, individuals now have to figure out just how to market their services effectively in this new, digital age. This century is vastly different from the last, and any chiropractor should recognize that. If you are going to stay competitive, you need a more updated approach to pull in business. The best way to view these changes is by seeing them as opportunities to shine. Simply having new chiropractic software is not enough. You have to know how to

The Importance of a Clinically Relevant, Patient-Centered, Presentation of Findings©

05-18-2010

I have stressed in my teaching and mentoring over the years, that the establishment of a strong, trusting, and honest relationship, is critical to the success of your treatment plan, and ultimately, your practice. When you spend the time, energy, and focus demanded to present your findings in a patient-centered way, to the person who may choose to become your patient, your presentation of findings (POF) will be a pivotal, and critical, component to the progressive development of your doctor-patient relationship. The POF must be sensitive to the wants of your patient, while still addressing the clinical needs of your patient. This honest presentation of fact, and options for addressing the problem, or problems, at hand, must also address the actual clinical needs, and realistic potential for improvement, (based upon current scientific knowledge). The POF must never be coercive, argumentative, or confrontational. All of these approaches…

Assessing Patient Expectation and Building Retention

04-13-2010

The person seeking help from a chiropractor has undergone an internal process of evaluation, introspective question and answer, and perhaps, a bit of investigation with others before ever contacting an office for help. I contend that by initially exploring what is in the patient’s mind during this discerning process, and then each day you encounter the patient, you can obtain insight into how to do a better job of meeting the patient’s expectations and attempting to actually exceed them. Pain and fear share a great deal. Fight or flight: an elevated heart rate and or increased respiratory rate, anxiety, desperation, and at times, anger. A patient seeking your help is driven to you by a combination of physiological and psychological responses or reactions. The conventions of society, though less…

The Triad of Chiropractic Practice

04-09-2010

Better than most other health professionals, we as chiropractors understand the devastating effects that stress and imbalance can have on our lives.  Every day we see people enter our practice suffering from the effects that physical, chemical or emotional stresses are having on their life and health.  Yet many of us in our own life and practice may be struggling with the very same things.

We as doctors and business people need to balance our practice life, our family life, and personal growth in order for us to remain healthy as well.  Often one of these areas may be suffering and we

True Wellness Model

03-17-2010

Many chiropractors tell me they practice a TRUE wellness model. But when we look at their statistics, procedures, and communications, the truth is many of them do not!  The great news is, more and more chiropractors want a wellness practice; they just don’t know how to do it.

If people really knew what was going on with their health, if they really knew what we do, if they really knew that they had a health problem and not a back problem, AND we could help them get healthy and stay healthy for a lifetime, then all we would have to do is show them how they can have it!

What is Your Chiropractic Message?

03-17-2010

drconsult2I have spent a great deal of time thinking about this specific question.  I was trying to come up with the ideal way to package what I offer so that my message would be completely congruent when talking to clients and people in my community about what it is that I provide as a chiropractor.  Was I a back and neck pain doctor?  Was I a family doctor seeing people from womb to tomb?  Was I a wellness or subluxation-based doctor?

Little Documentation Mistakes That Add Up to Big Problems

02-22-2010

With auditors examining our every move, many chiropractors are growing increasingly concerned about the state of their documentation.  Here’s the really bad news: as a Certified Professional Auditor and Professional Coder myself, I have reviewed countless chiropractic records and many DCs have good reason to worry.  Here’s the good news: this article will teach you how to avoid surprisingly common and easily overlooked mistakes in your documentation that generally spell big trouble during an audit.

Documentation

02-22-2010

baddocumentationIf you had to do a critical assessment of your daily chart notes, how would you rate them?  Do you record all the necessary components that would aid someone in understanding your patient’s case?  Would you be proud to share your notes with another professional such as a physician, lawyer, or associate?  If the answer to the above questions is “NO” you are not alone.

Since 2000, the CERT and more recently the OIG report have revealed what we already know about chiropractic documentation; it is abysmal.  We were especially weak in recording evaluations, treatment plans, treatment goals, and supporting the necessity for care.
